Our Regenerative Organic Cotton Research and Support Initiatives
Research shows that regenerative organic practices are the solution for tackling critical social and environmental issues such as climate change, food insecurity, poor nutrition, water scarcity, inequality, diseases, unfair treatment of farmers and farmworkers, and inhumane treatment of animals. Together, we can heal the planet and help enhance farmers’ livelihoods.
Empowering Smallholders: Our team of 18 dedicated staff supports over 1,250 smallholder farmers transitioning to organic and ROCâ„¢ cotton farming in India. Our support includes free non-GM seeds, intercropping seeds, tools, training, coverage of the certification fee, and a guarantee of purchasing the entire harvest through our partner factories and network. This model reduces financial risk for farmers because of our support, purchase guarantee, and long-term commitment.
Regenerative Organic Research Center: In collaboration with the Rodale Institute and the University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad, we launched India’s first Regenerative Organic Research, Education, and Training Center. Eight scientists are leading interdisciplinary studies on soil quality index, crop yield, quality parameters, nutrition density, and the economic benefits for farms and surrounding communities, and broader impacts.
Non-GM seeds research project: We are collaborating with a leading seed scientist, research center, and the Rodale Institute on a non-GM cotton seed research project focused on compact planting to increase yields, improve pest management, enhance fiber quality, synchronous maturity, and conduct biomarker studies. The ultimate goal is to provide farmers with better quality seeds and achieve seed sovereignty.
