Why Fair Trade?
Why Fair Trade?
In short, Fair Trade is a certification system that helps producers build sustainable businesses that support and positively influence communities.
In today's world unhealthy work places, unfair pay, and slave and child labors are widely used. In our everyday lives, you and I both don’t stand for these values – so why do we sell and buy products that use and promote them?
What can we do?
We, as manufacturers and suppliers, have the power to choose not only what we make and sell, but also let our buyers and consumers know how these products are produced. How can we exercise this power? By promoting Fair Trade Certified™ products!
When you choose Fair Trade Certified™ products, you promote:
- Legal wages and benefits for the workers
- Improved livlihoods
- Prompt payment
- Safe and healthy workplaces
- NO child or forced labor
- Gender equality in the workplace including:
- Women’s rights
- Equal pay
- Maternity leave
- Worker empowerment
- Accountable and responsible workplace management
In addition, all Fair Trade Certified products require a premium – funds sent directly to a worker controlled bank account. These premiums are used for a variety of community development projects decided by a democratically elected Fair Trade Committee. These projects can include:
- Facilitation of education
- Health programs
- Clean water projects
- Leadership training
Fair Trade certification requires accountability in our environmental impact – which is why we use 100% organic cotton which is not genetically engineered. Our footprint is closely monitored and regulated to reduce it as far as possible. Check out our full commitment to the environment with organic cotton here: http://www.global-standard.org/
